Nanofluids have excellent lubrication and high thermal conductivity. However, the agglomeration and sedimentation produced by the large surface energy of nanoparticles in base liquid threaten the long-term dispersion stability and impact the wide application of nanofluid. In this work, based on the self-assemble behavior and continuous network structure formed by low molecular weight organic gelator, the uniform clusters were formed through regulating the kinetics behavior in the gelling process. The dragging effect was demonstrated by oleic acid - sodium dodecyl sulfate (OA-SDS) bicomponent gelator and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. The results showed that GO nanofluids dispersed by OA-SDS were stable for more than 12 months. The well-dispersed GO nanofluid exhibited better anti-friction and anti-wear properties under both immersion and electrostatic minimum quantity lubrication conditions. Moreover, the lower contact angle, surface tension and droplet size of nanofluids after charging improved the wettability on the frictional interface. The GO adsorption film formed on the friction interface protected the tribochemical reaction film of iron oxide and prevented the occurrence of sintering of base oil.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow patterns and their relationship with arterial pulsation can depict the function of glymphatic system (GS). We propose an improved multi-directional diffusion-sensitized driven-equilibrium (iMDDSDE) prepared heavily T2-weighted 3D FSE (iMDDSDE-HT2) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method to noninvasively assess the mobility (MO) of CSF distributed in the ventricles and perivascular spaces (PVS). This method could obtain 3D high resolution (1 mm isotropic) imaging of CSF MO with full brain coverage within five min and distinguish the CSF MO across different pulse phases using a peripheral pulse unit (PPU). The MO curves had the largest amplitude value in the PVS of middle cerebral artery (11.11 × 10-9 m2/s) and the largest amplitude growth rate in the posterior cerebral artery (189%). The average coefficient of variations (CVs) in non-pulse trigger and pulse phase 1 and 3 were 0.11, 0.10 and 0.09 respectively. The MO in older healthy participants was lower compared to the young participants, and the MO in cerebral major artery stenosis patients with acute ischemia stroke (AIS) were lower compared to those without AIS in several ventriclar ROIs (P < 0.05). This sequence is a clinically feasible method to effectively evaluate CSF flow patterns in human brain.

BACKGROUND: Meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs) have proven to bear a relationship with tumor immunity and therapeutic efficacy of intracranial malignant tumors in pre-clinical animal studies. We aimed to explore the association between mLV function and intracranial malignant tumors in clinical participants. METHODS: The participants were allocated to a control group or a group of patients with intracranial tumors. Dynamic enhanced magnetic resonance was used to evaluate the wash-in and wash-out functions of mLVs around the superior sagittal sinus and the sigmoid sinus. FINDINGS: A total of 246 individuals were recruited for our study. The area under curve and wash-in rate of mLVs in the intracranial tumor group were higher than in the control group (2,749 vs. 2,110, p < 0.001 and 3.72 vs. 2.87, p < 0.001, respectively). The wash-out ratio of mLVs was lower in the intracranial tumor group than in the control group (0.65 vs. 0.73, p < 0.001). Decreased wash-out of mLVs was associated with tumor progression (ß = -0.118; p < 0.001). High-grade glioma and isocitrate dehydrogenase wild type were associated with a lower mLV wash-out function (ß = -0.057, p = 0.044 and ß = -0.069, p = 0.047, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Intracranial malignant tumors were associated with elevated wash-in function and decreased wash-out function of mLVs. High-grade glioma and isocitrate dehydrogenase wild type were associated with low mLV wash-out function, and long-term decreased mLV wash-out function was a risk factor for tumor progression. Depression is a common chronic psychiatric illness, which is resistant to medical treatments. While melatonin may alleviate certain depression symptoms, evidence for its efficacy against core symptoms is lacking. Here, we tested a mechanism whereby melatonin rescues the behavioral outcomes of the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse model of depression. CUMS mice showed depressive behaviors to tail suspension, open field behavior, and sucrose preference test, and cognitive dysfunction in the Morris water maze. Impairments in these measures were relieved by melatonin treatment. Moreover, CUMS mice had impaired glymphatic function across the sleep-wake cycle due to the astrocytic loss and disturbance of circadian regulation of the polarized expression of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channels in perivascular astrocytes. EEG results in CUMS mice showed a reduced total sleep time and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, due to sleep fragmentation in the light phase. CUMS mice lost the normal rhythmic expressions of circadian proteins Per2, Cry2, Bmal1, Clock, and Per1. However, the melatonin treatment restored glymphatic system function and the polarization of AQP4, while improving sleep structure, and rectifying the abnormal expression of Per2, Bmal1, Clock, and Per1 in CUMS mice. Interestingly, Per2 expression correlated negatively with the polarization of AQP4. Further studies demonstrated that Per2 directed the location of AQP4 expression via interactions with the α-dystrobrevin (Dtna) subunit of AQP4 in primary cultured astrocytes. In conclusion, we report a new mechanism whereby melatonin improves depression outcomes by regulating the expression of the circadian protein Per2, maintaining the circadian rhythm of astrocytic AQP4 polarization, and restoring glymphatic function.

BACKGROUND: Allostatic load (AL) is a biological tool for objectively assessing chronic stress and has been discussed inconsistently for its correlation with socioeconomic factors and unhealthy lifestyles. Therefore, this meta-analysis was performed to explore the impact of socioeconomic factors and unhealthy lifestyles on AL. METHOD: Different databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, EBSCOhost, Embase, CNKI, VIP, SinoMed, and Wanfang, were searched from inception to June 6, 2023. A total of 25 studies, reporting the correlations of seven socioeconomic factors and three unhealthy lifestyles with AL, were finally included. The pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were examined using random-effect and fixed-effect models. Literature quality, heterogeneity, and publication bias were evaluated. RESULTS: The meta-analysis showed a significantly increased risk of high AL in the older individuals as compared to the younger ones (OR = 1.05, 95% CI 1.04-1.06), in the individual with low education as compared to those with high education (OR = 1.25, 95% CI 1.05-1.48), and in the individuals with low physical activities as compared to those with high physical activities (OR = 1.44, 95% CI 1.26-1.64). This meta-analysis also showed a significantly decreased risk of high AL in the individuals with high income as compared to those with low income (OR = 0.77, 95% CI 0.71-0.83) and in women as compared to men (OR = 0.80, 95% CI 0.80-0.81). CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis showed older people, men, and people having low physical activity, low income, and low education were more likely to have a high AL. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This meta-analysis was registered on the PROSPERO database with trial registration number CRD42022326105. Instead of providing information at registration, we added an author (Tingyu Mu), who provided critical revisions to the paper in this meta-analysis.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes severe functional deficits and neuronal damage, accompanied by intense glial activation. The voltage-gated proton channel Hv1, selectively expressed on microglia, is associated with SCI progression. However, the effect of Hv1 on the phenotypes and functions of reactive astrocytes after SCI remains unclear. Here, we combined Hv1 knockout (Hv1-/- ) mice and T10 spinal cord contusion to investigate the effects of microglial Hv1 on SCI pathophysiology and the phenotypes and functions of reactive astrocytes. After SCI, astrocytes proliferated and activated in the peri-injury area and exhibited an A1-dominant phenotype. Hv1 knockout reduced neurotoxic A1 astrocytes and shifted the dominant phenotype of reactive astrocytes from A1 to A2, enhancing synaptogenesis promotion, phagocytosis, and neurotrophy of astrocytes. Moreover, synaptic and axonal remodeling as well as motor recovery after SCI benefited from the improved astrocytic functions of Hv1 knockout. Furthermore, exogenous and endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) in astrocytes after SCI were reduced by Hv1 knockout. Our in vitro results showed that inhibition of ROS reduced the neurotoxic A1 phenotype in primary astrocytes via the STAT3 pathway. Similar to the effect of Hv1 knockout, the application of the ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine reduced SCI-induced neurotoxic A1 astrocytes in vivo. Based on the in vivo and vitro results, we elucidated that microglial Hv1 knockout promotes synaptic and axonal remodeling in SCI mice by decreasing neurotoxic A1 astrocytes and increasing neuroprotective A2 astrocytes via the ROS/STAT3 pathway. Therefore, the Hv1 proton channel is a promising target for the treatment of SCI.

BACKGROUND: High levels of childhood trauma (CT) have been observed in adults with mental health problems. Herein, we investigated whether self-esteem (SE) and emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES)) affect the association between CT and mental health in adulthood, including depression and anxiety symptoms. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study of 6057 individuals (39.99% women, median age = 34 y), recruited across China via the internet, who completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Self-esteem Scale (SES), and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). Multivariate linear regression analysis and bias-corrected percentile bootstrap methodologies were used to assess the mediating effect of SE, and hierarchical regression analysis and subgroup approach were performed to examine the moderating effects of emotion regulation strategies. RESULTS: After controlling for age and sex, we found that (1) SE mediated the associations between CT and depression symptoms in adulthood (indirect effect = 0.05, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.04-0.05, 36.2% mediated), and CT and anxiety symptoms in adulthood (indirect effect = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.03-0.04, 32.0% mediated); (2) CR moderated the association between CT and SE; and (3) ES moderated the association between of CT and mental health in adulthood via SE, and such that both the CT-SE and SE-mental health pathways were stronger when ES is high rather than low, resulting the indirect effect was stronger for high ES than for low ES. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested that SE plays a partially mediating role in the association between CT and mental health in adulthood. Furthermore, ES aggravated the negative effect of CT on mental health in adulthood via SE. Interventions such as emotional expression training may help reduce the detrimental effects of CT on mental health. Infectious diarrhea is a common disease in preschool children, but the pathogenic species, origins, and influencing factors remain debatable. Therefore, more studies are required to solve these debatable topics. A number of 260 eligible preschool children diagnosed with infectious diarrhea in our hospital were enrolled in the infection group. Meanwhile, a number of 260 matched healthy children from the health center were enrolled in the control group. The pathogenic species and origins, the time of onset of infectious diarrhea in the infection group, demographic data, exposure history, hygiene habits, dietary habits, and other variables in both groups were initially collected from medical documents. In addition, a questionnaire was used to complete and confirm study variables through face-to-face or telephone interviews. Then, the univariate and multivariate regression analyses were used to screen the influencing factors of infectious diarrhea. Among 260 infected children, salmonella (15.77%), rotavirus (13.85%), shigella (11.54%), vibrio (10.38%), and norovirus (8.85%) were the top 5 common pathogens; January (13.85%), December (12.69%), August (12.31%), February (11.92%), and July (8.46%) were the top 5 frequent times of infectious diarrhea. The distribution of onset time for infectious diarrhea was commonly found in winter and summer, and the pathogens always originated from foods. The results of multivariate regression analysis showed that recent exposure to diarrhea, flies, and/or cockroaches indoors were the 2 risk factors for infectious diarrhea; Meanwhile, rotavirus vaccination, regular hand-washing, tableware disinfection, separate preparation of cooked and raw foods, and regular intake of lactobacillus products were the 5 protective factors for infectious diarrhea in preschool children. Infectious diarrhea has a diversity of pathogenic species, origins, and influencing factors in preschool children. Activities focusing on these influencing factors such as rotavirus vaccination, consumption of lactobacillus products, and other conventional factors would be beneficial to preschool children's health.

Chinese medicinal herbal residues (CMHRs) are waste generated after extracting Chinese medicinal materials, and they can be used as a renewable bioresource. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of aerobic composting (AC), anaerobic digestion (AD), and aerobic-anaerobic coupling composting (AACC) for the treatment of CMHRs. CMHRs were mixed with sheep manure and biochar, and composted separately under AC, AD, and AACC conditions for 42 days. Physicochemical indices, enzyme activities, and bacterial communities were monitored during composting. Results showed that AACC- and AC-treated CMHRs were well-rotted, with the latter exhibiting the lowest C/N ratio and maximal germination index (GI) values. Higher phosphatase and peroxidase activities were detected during the AACC and AC treatments. Better humification was observed under AACC based on the higher catalase activities and lower E4/E6. AC treatment was effective in reducing compost toxicity. This study provides new insights into biomass resource utilisation.

BACKGROUND: Immediately after spinal trauma, immune cells, and proinflammatory cytokines infiltrate the spinal cord and disrupt the focal microenvironment, which impedes axon regeneration and functional recovery. Previous studies have reported that regulatory T cells (Tregs) enter the central nervous system and exert immunosuppressive effects on microglia during multiple sclerosis and stroke. However, whether and how Tregs interact with microglia and modulate injured microenvironments after spinal cord injury (SCI) remains unknown. METHOD: Regulatory T cells spatiotemporal characteristics were analyzed in a mouse contusion SCI model. Microglia activation status was evaluated by immunostaining and RNA sequencing. Cytokine production in injured spinal cord was examined using Luminex. The role of STAT3 in Treg-microglia crosstalk was investigated in a transwell system with isolated Tregs and primary microglia. RESULTS: Regulatory T cells infiltration of the spinal cord peaked on day 7 after SCI. Treg depletion promoted microglia switch to a proinflammatory phenotype. Inflammation-related genes, such as ApoD, as well as downstream cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α were upregulated in microglia in Treg-depleted mice. STAT3 inhibition was involved in Treg-microglia crosstalk, and STAT3 chemical blockade improved function recovery in Treg-depleted mice. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that Tregs promote functional recovery after SCI by alleviating microglia inflammatory reaction via STAT3.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated anxiety and related symptoms among the general population. In order to cope with the mental health burden, we developed an online brief modified mindfulness-based stress reduction (mMBSR) therapy. We performed a parallel-group randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of the mMBSR for adult anxiety with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as an active control. Participants were randomized to mMBSR, CBT or waitlist group. Those in the intervention arms performed each therapy for 6 sections in 3 weeks. Measurements were conducted at baseline, post-treatment and 6 months post-treatment by Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Patient Health Questionnaire-15, reverse scored Cohen Perceived Stress scale, Insomnia Severity Index, and Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale. 150 participants with anxiety symptoms were randomized to mMBSR, CBT or waitlist group. Post intervention assessments showed that mMBSR improved the scores of all the six mental problem dimensions (anxiety, depression, somatization, stress, insomnia, and the experience of pleasure) significantly compared to the waitlist group. During 6-month post treatment assessment, the scores of all six mental problem dimensions in the mMBSR group still showed improvement compared to baseline and showed no significant difference with the CBT group. Our results provide positive evidence for the efficacy and feasibility of an online brief modified MBSR program to alleviate anxiety and related symptoms of individuals from the general population, and the therapeutic benefits of mMBSR persisted for up to six months. This low resource-consuming intervention could facilitate the challenges of supplying psychological health therapy to large scale of population.

Stroke imposes a substantial burden worldwide. With the rapid economic and lifestyle transition in China, trends of the prevalence of stroke across different geographic regions in China remain largely unknown. Capitalizing on the data in the National Health Services Surveys (NHSS), we assessed the prevalence and risk factors of stroke in China from 2003 to 2018. In this study, data from 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2018 NHSS were collected. Stroke cases were based on participants' self-report of a previous diagnosis by clinicians. We estimated the trends of stroke prevalence for the overall population and subgroups by age, sex, and socioeconomic factors, then compared across different geographic regions. We applied multivariable logistic regression to assess associations between stroke and risk factors. The number of participants aged 15 years or older were 154,077, 146,231, 230,067, and 212,318 in 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2018, respectively, among whom, 1435, 1996, 3781, and 6069 were stroke patients. The age and sex standardized prevalence per 100,000 individuals was 879 in 2003, 1100 in 2008, 1098 in 2013, and 1613 in 2018. Prevalence per 100,000 individuals in rural areas increased from 669 in 2003 to 1898 in 2018, while urban areas had a stable trend from 1261 in 2003 to 1365 in 2018. Across geographic regions, the central region consistently had the highest prevalence, but the western region has an alarmingly increasing trend from 623/100,000 in 2003 to 1898/100,000 in 2018 (P trend<0.001), surpassing the eastern region in 2013. Advanced age, male sex, rural area, central region, hypertension, diabetes, depression, low education and income level, retirement or unemployment, excessive physical activity, and unimproved sanitation facilities were significantly associated with stroke. In conclusion, the increasing prevalence of stroke in China was primarily driven by economically underdeveloped regions. It is important to develop targeted prevention programs in underdeveloped regions. Besides traditional risk factors, more attention should be paid to nontraditional risk factors to improve the prevention of stroke.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common tumor that metastasizes to the brain. It is now accepted that the successful colonization and growth of tumor cells are determined by the interaction between tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME). Microglia, brain innate immune cells, have been reported to play a vital role in the establishment of brain metastases. As essential mediators of intercellular communications, tumor-derived exosomes have an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of cancer by transferring their cargos to specific recipient cells. The crosstalk between microglia and tumor-derived exosomes has been extensively described. However, it is still unclear whether metastatic NSCLC cells secret exosomes to microglia and regulate the microglial functions. Here, our results showed that microglia aggregated in the brain metastatic sites. Meanwhile, microglia could take up the exosomes derived from NSCLC cells, leading to alterations of microglial morphology and increased proliferation, phagocytosis, and release of inflammatory cytokines including interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and CXCL1. Further investigation indicated that miR1246 was the most enriched microRNA in NSCLC-derived exosomes and mediated the partial effects of exosomes on microglia. Notably, miR1246 was also upregulated in the plasmatic exosomes of NSCLC patients. These results offer a new insight into the impact of NSCLC-derived exosomes on microglia and provide a new potential biomarker for diagnosing NSCLC.

The concept of the glial-vascular unit (GVU) was raised recently to emphasize the close associations between brain cells and cerebral vessels, and their coordinated reactions to diverse neurological insults from a "glio-centric" view. GVU is a multicellular structure composed of glial cells, perivascular cells, and perivascular space. Each component is closely linked, collectively forming the GVU. The central roles of glial and perivascular cells and their multi-level interconnections in the GVU under normal conditions and in central nervous system (CNS) disorders have not been elucidated in detail. Here, we comprehensively review the intensive interactions between glial cells and perivascular cells in the niche of perivascular space, which take part in the modulation of cerebral blood flow and angiogenesis, formation of the blood-brain barrier, and clearance of neurotoxic wastes. Next, we discuss dysfunctions of the GVU in various neurological diseases, including ischemic stroke, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's disease, and major depression disorder. In addition, we highlight the possible therapies targeting the GVU, which may have potential clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Achieving universal health coverage (UHC) is one crucial target of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, consistent trends data for UHC evaluation in China are still scarce. The aim of our study was to provide a comprehensive assessment of UHC in China. METHODS: In this serial cross-sectional study, we collected nationally representative data from the latest four rounds (2003, 2008, 2013, and 2018) of the National Health Service Surveys, with the aim of evaluating UHC in China. These surveys used multistage stratified cluster sampling covering all 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in mainland China. Within each household, all members aged 15 years and older were interviewed. For children and adolescents aged younger than 15 years, their adult family members answered the questions for them. We constructed a UHC index following the WHO-recommended framework that included service coverage (nine prevention indicators and five treatment indicators) and financial protection (three indicators) dimensions. Bayesian regression models were done to investigate the trends in and projections of UHC index and indicators, with average annual percentage change (AAPC) and probabilities of achieving the 2030 WHO targets. Based on trends and projections, we counted population equivalents with UHC coverage. To examine the potential efficiency of financial investment, we quantified UHC performance based on government health expenditure (GHE) per capita. Finally, we explored the association between each UHC indicator and macroeconomic and health systems characteristics by using multiple regression. FINDINGS: We sampled 57 023 households from 95 counties between September and October, 2003; 56 456 households from 94 counties between June and July, 2008; 93 613 households from 156 counties between August and October, 2013; and 94 076 households from 156 counties in September, 2018. A total of 901 182 individuals were involved in this study (193 689 in 2003, 177 501 in 2008, 273 688 in 2013, and 256 304 in 2018). Although the overall UHC increased from 44·0% (95% CI 43·0-44·9) in 2003 to 79·8% (79·2-80·3) in 2018 and is predicted to meet the 80% global target by 2030, the progress towards UHC has steadily slowed down nationally. Based on current projections, an estimated 105·8 (95% CI 27·3-189·1) million population equivalents would still not have UHC coverage in 2030. The treatment index showed a large increase over time from 2003 to 2018 (AAPC 4·9%, 2·9-7·2), with minimal disparities and all subgroups will achieve the target in the treatment domain by 2030 (possibilities higher than 90%). However, the prevention index presented poor performance with a small increase over time from 2003 to 2018 (AAPC 1·4%, 0·3-2·5) and sizable disparities across regions, urban-rural areas, and income (all p<0·0001). To achieve at least 80% UHC coverage, provinces would need to reach at least ¥445 in GHE per capita per year under maximum efficiency. However, large gaps between the observed and frontier UHC index, especially in several western provinces, indicated inefficiency. Furthermore, we found that primary health-care institutions were closely and positively related to UHC indicators especially in the prevention domain. INTERPRETATION: Although considerable achievements have been made, the progress towards UHC is not keeping pace with the rapid society development in China. Considering an increased burden in non-communicable diseases and an ageing population, prioritising the efficacy of financial investment and optimising resource allocation by strengthening primary health care are necessary to achieve UHC in China. Tuberculosis remains a serious world public health problem. Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the one of most severe forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. However, the insensitivity and time-consuming requirement of culturing the pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the traditional "gold standard" diagnostic test for TBM, often delays timely diagnosis and treatment, resulting in high disability and mortality rates. In our series case study, we present five pathogen-negative TBM cases who received empirical anti-tuberculosis therapy with a good clinical outcome. We describe in detail the clinical symptoms, laboratory test results, and imaging findings of the five patients from symptom onset to dynamic follow-up. We then summarize the similarities of the clinical characteristics of the presented patients, as well as shared features in laboratory and imaging tests, and proceed to analyze the challenges in the timely diagnosis of TBM. Finally, we argue that monitoring of cerebrospinal fluid markers and imaging are critical for the diagnosis and treatment of TBM, and emphasize the importance of differential diagnosis in cases when tuberculous meningitis is highly suspected despite negative findings for that etiology.

Objective: Low heart rate variability (HRV), an indicator of autonomic nervous system dysfunction, has been associated with increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and incident stroke. However, the relationship between HRV and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) showed contradictory results. We aimed to examine the relationship of HRV and total burden of CSVD and each of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers of CSVD. Methods: We recruited 435 patients who attended our hospital for physical examination between June 2020 and August 2021. All underwent 24-h Holter monitoring and MRI scan. The standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) was selected as the method for HRV assessment. The presence of severe white matter hyperintensity, lacunes, and >10 enlarged basal ganglia perivascular spaces, and cerebral microbleeds were added for estimating the CSVD score (0-4). Multivariate logistic analyses was performed to assess whether HRV was independently associated with the burden of CSVD and each of the MRI markers of CSVD, with and without stratification by prevalent diabetes. Results: This study included 435 subjects with a mean age of 64.0 (57.0-70.0) years; 49.4% of the patients were male, and 122 (28.0%) had a history of diabetes. In multivariate analyses, lower SDNN was independently associated with total burden of CSVD and the presence of enlarged perivascular spaces in all subjects. According to diabetes stratification, lower SDNN was independently associated with total burden of CSVD and each MRI markers of CSVD separately only in the diabetic group. Conclusions: Lower HRV was associated with total burden of CSVD and each MRI markers of CSVD separately among diabetic patients, but not among non-diabetic patients.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative nursing can improve the quality of life (QoL) and functional prognosis for lung cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of high-quality nursing on inflammation and prognosis in postoperative patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: A total of 372 patients with NSCLC were enrolled between the May 2014 and June 2016. Patients were randomly received high-quality nursing (n = 192) or normal nursing (n = 180). Symptom management, QoL, hospital stay, inflammatory score, survival time, recurrence rate, symptoms, anxiety, depression scale and psychological distress were assessed at baseline and 5-year follow up. RESULTS: High-quality nursing significantly shortened hospital stay, improved postoperative inflammation, symptom management, QoL compared to patients received normal nursing. Compare with normal nursing, high-quality nursing decreased anxiety, depression scale and psychological distress for postoperative patients with advanced NSCLC. Outcomes showed that high-quality nursing increased the survival time and decreased recurrence rate for postoperative patients with advanced NSCLC. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, data in the current study indicate that high-quality nursing can decrease inflammation and improve prognosis for the postoperative patients with NSCLC.

Background and purpose: The relationship between sleep duration and stroke are inconclusive in China, especially in those individuals with metabolic syndrome. We aimed to investigate the association between sleep duration and incident stroke in participants with metabolic syndrome or its specific components in China. Materials and methods: Data were taken from the 2011 and 2015 waves of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Habitual sleep duration (≤6, 6∼8 [reference], >8 h), daytime napping (0, 1∼60 [reference], and >60 min) were determined by self-reported questionnaires. Metabolic syndrome was defined by blood assessment and biomarkers combined with self-reported doctors' diagnosis. Incident stroke was determined by reported stroke from 2011 to 2015 wave. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between sleep and (incident) stroke at baseline and 4-year follow-up period were tested among the population with metabolic syndrome and its components. Results: A U-shaped relationship was observed between sleep duration and stroke in cross-sectional analysis. Sleep ≤ 6 h/night had a greater risk of incident stroke (hazard ratio [HR] 1.65; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-2.61) compared with sleep 6∼8 h/night. And the HR of stroke was 1.62 (95%CI, 1.03-2.53) for sleep < 7 h/day compared to 7∼9 h/day. These associations were more evident in the female and individuals aged 45-65 years. Furthermore, the effect of short sleep duration on incident stroke was different in each component of metabolic syndrome, which was more pronounced in participants with elevated blood pressure. And a significant joint effect of sleeping ≤ 6 h/night and no napping on risk of stroke was observed (HR 1.82, 95%CI 1.06-3.12). Conclusion: Short sleep duration was an independent risk factor for incident stroke, especially among females, individuals aged 45-65 years, or those with some components of metabolic syndrome, such as hypertension. Napping could buffer the risk of short sleep duration on incident stroke.
